Captain Linda Orlady
President, Orlady Associates
Linda has had a long involvement in aviation, human factors, and safety as a pilot, instructor, safety volunteer, researcher, accident investigator and author. She is a third-generation pilot and most recently served as a Chief Pilot for the Boeing Company. Prior to that, Linda flew for United Airlines (UAL) for twenty-five years, also working in management. She is rated in the Airbus 319 and 320 and Boeing models from the 737 through the 787 and holds a commercial rotorcraft rating.
Linda co-authored a 600-page book, Human Factors in Multi-Crew Flight Operations, which was also translated into Chinese, published numerous articles and book chapters and given many international presentations. She was appointed by the FAA to serve as a chair on the Safety Management System Aviation Rulemaking Committee.
Linda has volunteered in several safety areas. She served on the Board of Governors for the Flight Safety Foundation for ten years and was honored to receive a President’s Citation. She also volunteered for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) as the Executive Air Safety Vice Chair and Safety Management System (SMS) Project Director. Linda was appointed by the FAA to serve as one of the Chairs for the SMS Aviation Rulemaking Committee.
Linda remains passionate about the industry, encouraging cross-disciplinary discussions, development of robust safety management systems and communications, and advocating for effective use of voluntary incident reporting. She has worked with the Canadian Women in Aviation and Museum of Flight encouraging young people to enter and explore this wonderful aviation industry.
